Mother

Many of us know Matt on WP. He has been a great friend since the Xanga days. If you cannot recall his name, his id is Elusive words. What a beautiful id! I wish I had thought of it before he did! All my ideas go by the roadside when it comes to originality.

Anyway, Matt (sometimes I call him Mattie), has been so gracious with his time and help to me on several occasions. He is so smart and knows so much about computing and all the tech crap! Me, I know didly. So, I holler when I have some problem and I am sure he thinks, here comes this mad woman again.

Having said that, Matt is such a genuine guy. He is so complimentary about my poems and my thoughts; so many times he compares my gardening and cooking to his mother’s work. Sons and mothers— what special place they hold in each other’s heart!

SO, I wrote a poem for him, about his feelings for his mother. He didn’t know I was going to write about it; I surprised him.

Love you Mattie.

MOTHER! (For Elusive Words. )

My world in the fabric of your scarf covering me
my blessings in the touch of your working hands~
you were the shade in the wilderness of my youth
guiding me, lighting my path along the grains of sands
that littered my unbalanced mind!

The light of your eyes, benevolent and compassionate
gave radiance to my cloudy, helter-skelter life;
you understood me, and with your gentleness
touched my soul– I grew up, without fear–
small steps of strength against venoms of strife!

I see your face on the pages of my Bible
hear your voice in the words there,
I smell you near me when I am in the kitchen
and I smile when I feel your presence-

How many years has it been?
I continue to feel the touch of your slender
over-worked fingers, and hear the soft words
whispered at my silly aches and tears. Mother, you
are my poem, and I miss you— always!

My daughter Saadia a great poet and story teller, has two sons; the oldest grandson is now 21 years old, doing architectural engineering at Missouri S&T in Rolla MO. His younger brother is almost 16 and taking driving lessons seriously and is in High School. The other two grandsons, children of my son Sayeed, are 9 and 5. I have recently published another book titled Gulistan, A home of Flowers. It has stories and memories of my childhood and of a distant land which I still consider as my HOME., even though I have lived here in the US for more than fifty years. Hope to see you on my blog.

A beautiful thought, Zakiah — and a beautiful poem! I’m sure Matt was delighted to read this!

  3. Thank you for your kindness and your poem. It’s beautiful and captures the emotion so nicely. I’ve always had the feeling you and my mom would get along. She loved gardening, cooking, painting but most of all – her family.

    *hugs*

    p.s. I’m not really a computer whiz.

This is a beautiful tribute! Too many people are not close to family and parents especially. I mourn those relationships that have turned sour…

So true Val. I have had such despairing incidents in my own family at home in India. I pity the children who have distanced themselves from the parents. Such a great loss for them and their children.

  5. Such beautiful words, Zakiah: I guess the emotion of Matt at reading this poem.
    Love ❤

      Dear Michel,
Thank you for reading this. Matt is such a caring and compassionate man. His love for his parents was so touching and humbling. Would all sons and daughters feel that same emotional attachment.
      Love,
      Zakiah.

Matt is a wonderful friend to many of us! 🙂

That’s it! He is such a great friend to every one, and all of us get the feeling that he is special just unto them. He gives that feeling of possessiveness I think.
Thanks love for the neat comment.
