A Poem about a Headline Found in the News. (NPM)

There is Breaking News on the TV,
I stop in my tread and turn to face the screen.

The headline says, “A shooting in California
many people dead. Killers are killed.”
I sit down, hands to my mouth
“Please God, don’t let those murderers be
Muslims!

We’ve had enough blood thrown on Islam
Trump and Cruz are already building walls
and concentration camps in their heads. Please
dear Lord, let this shooting be gang related!”

The anchor speaks, solemn voice, I stop
breathing… “The killers are recognized!
Husband and wife, both Muslims, raided
a Christmas party, killing several innocent people”.

I heard a groan that came out like a cry. I didn’t
know when I had fallen to the ground, the crying
groan had escaped from my heart!”

About Zakiah

I write poetry and some fiction, have a book that was published in 2012. . . Stray Thoughts/Winged Words. I have four grandchildren, ages 16 and half to almost 16 months. I love the ocean, and grew up along the Indian Ocean in South India. I am a retired physician. Don't know much else to say. Thanks for reading. That has been my profile for so many years. My daughter Saadia a great poet and story teller, has two sons; the oldest grandson is now 21 years old, doing architectural engineering at Missouri S&T in Rolla MO. His younger brother is almost 16 and taking driving lessons seriously and is in High School. The other two grandsons, children of my son Sayeed, are 9 and 5. I have recently published another book titled Gulistan, A home of Flowers. It has stories and memories of my childhood and of a distant land which I still consider as my HOME., even though I have lived here in the US for more than fifty years. Hope to see you on my blog.

Oh, dear, Zakiah — I think we all let out a cry of dismay that day. A cry for the Muslims not involved, a cry for the victims, a cry for the survivors, a cry for society — and most of all, a cry for a time-honored religion. Trump will find out that his wall won’t work — the Mexican drug smugglers will build tunnels under it, and they will be sophisticated tunnels, with electric trams, lights, etc. It will take less time to build than the wall! And Cruz’ concentration camp won’t happen either. This is a beautifully written poem, exposing an ugly part of current America.

  2. I agree with Janet. It’s sad that many are blamed for the actions of few…that the dedicated and true Muslims are blamed for the actions of the radicals. It’s a sad, very sad time in America. Hugs

  3. We need bridges not walls. I worry when politicians are more interested in divisive politics. Once that fuse is lit, it is very difficult to put it out.

  4. I know this pains you greatly and I am so sorry. Know though, that there are lots and lots of us who think Cruz and Trump are xenophobic idiots. I am so grateful to have so many wonderful Muslim friends in my life; you included.

  5. I wish your poem could be published in newspapers or read on TV. I feel your heart pain and your heart concern and your heart love. I wish many many many many other people could, too. As we’ve talked about before, there are people of every religion and people with no religion who do gruesome horrifying things. 😦
I like what Matt said…I was thinking the exact same thing…bridges instead of walls.
    (((HUGS)))

  6. I agree with cAROLYN and Matt above , Zakiah .
Your poem is a cry . that all good willing people share
    Love ❤

i’m sad to hear this. i’m oblivious to the news living outside usa, but i just can’t comprehend what does religion has anything to do with the killings of innocent lives. they must have had their brain washed and planted with an evil seed disguising itself as a religion.
